Bid to save
st George's Cathedral

St George's Cathedral, Cape Town

Bid to save st George's Cathedral

Cape storms battered one of the country's most historic places of worship so badly over the years that millions of rands are now needed urgently to fix it.

The building has withstood many storms, but can take no more punishment.

"Over the years we have repaired the roof. Now, alas, it is beyond repair and is in need of replacing. Estimates range from R7-million to R9-million.

The foundation stone of the cathedral was laid on August 22 1901 by the Duke of Cornwall, who later became King George V.

Though its history is linked to a colonial, imperialist past, the cathedral became a beacon of liberation. It opened its doors to worshippers of all races during apartheid.

St George's cathedral has become synonymous with the struggle for the dignity of all people and a place with a vision of what a new South Africa could look like with justice as a hallmark

On September 13 1989, about 30000 people marched from the cathedral to call for the release of political prisoners, unbanning of political parties and an end to the tricameral parliament.

Students also gathered at the cathedral to draw attention to segregation at universities.

"It was here that HIV and Aids was openly spoken about as members of the gay community gathered to bury Aids's first victims. It was here where bishop Desmond Tutu was enthroned as archbishop

Calvin Gilfillan, CEO of Cape Town Routes Unlimited, said the cathedral appealed to tourists and "increased the flow of visitors to the city" with its powerful heritage

"It is our hope that everyone who loves this place and who celebrates its history and who in some way is part of its story as a beacon of transformation will find ways to assist and help us meet the challenge of replacing the roof and having the cathedral as a place of healing and wholeness for many decades to come," Terry Lester – Sub Dean

We appeal to all who love this Cathedral - here in our City, the Province, the Country and throughout the World to help us raise this roof.
