Founded in 1954, the Friends of St. George’s Cathedral exists to unite all those who love and respect St. George’s and who desire to beautify, extend, preserve and nurture its work.
In 1834 St George’s Church first opened its doors on land consecrated in 1827 by the Bishop of Calcutta. That building was made a cathedral on 25 June 1847. Forty years later Diocesan Synod appointed a committee to raise funds for a new cathedral and the design of Herbert Baker FRIBA was accepted.
The foundation stone for the new cathedral was laid on 22 August 1901 by HRH the Duke of Cornwall and York, later King George V. Few who witnessed that ceremony could have imagined the impact which this building and those who served God from it would have on the life not only of the South African, but also the world-wide community.
From understandably colonial beginnings, St George's emerged through the darkest of times for South Africa as a truly international symbol of challenge, inspiration and freedom. It is this noble heritage which the Friends of the Cathedral wish to celebrate and extend. Please support this work by becoming a Friend of the People's Cathedral.
Current projects sponsored by the Friends include:
- the provision of a gift shop and welcome station in the Link, to generate income for
the Cathedral’s Arch (Soup Bowl) which feeds upwards of 200 homeless people each day
