The Crossing
The Parish Mass is celebrated on the carpeted platform between the front pews in the nave and the chancel steps. The celebrant thus stands in the body of the church, not at a distance at the high altar with his back to the congregation. This has become common practice in Anglican churches.
This platform in the crossing has become more and more useful - in important civic and state occasions, as a setting for orchestras and choirs in the cathedral's music programmes, and as a stage for nativity and other plays and presentations.
