THE HARD ROAD TO GLORY - Chris Chivers

Chris Chivers, priest, musician and writer, spent six months on the staff of St George's Cathedral, Cape Town, in 1996. Those who read his previous book, Echoes of a Rainbow Song - which was widely praised by reviewers - will know how deeply this experience affected him. His latest book continues the journey, revealing - not least through the author's many friendships across every community in Cape Town and beyond - the immense cost and the hope at the heart of South Africa's transition to democracy.

How do we make sense of history so as to show where we are on our journey? What continues to inform or imprison us? Can we interpret this so as to build the future we all desire for ourselves and our children? From his vantage point at the heart of a nation in dynamic transition, as Canon Precentor for two years at one of the world’s most vibrant cathedrals - a centre of protest during the apartheid era in South Africa and a focus, now, for healing and re-conciliation - Chris Chivers (now Precentor of Westminster Abbey, London) offers, in this eloquent collection of writings and sermons, an imaginative exploration of questions which arise acutely from the South African context but which are part and parcel of life for every citizen of the globe. He does so in a thoroughly compelling way which will be an inspiration to all who follow with him The Hard Road to Glory.
